TRAVEL ADVICE

How to Get to Mersing Jetty from Kuala Lumpur

Private transfer and express bus are the two best ways to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing for a ferry connection to Tioman Island. Both take you overland into Mersing itself, so you can either travel the day before and stay overnight in Mersing town, or continue to Mersing Jetty on the same day when your road journey and ferry time work well together.

Private transfer

Direct to Mersing Jetty or an agreed Mersing town hotel

Express bus

TBS to Mersing Bus Terminal, then a short connection to the jetty

Check your Tioman jetty

Ask your accommodation which island jetty you need, then compare ferry departures from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok.

A private transfer can take you directly from your Kuala Lumpur hotel or agreed address to Mersing Jetty or an agreed hotel in Mersing town. The bus is the lower-cost option and travels from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Mersing Bus Terminal, which is about a 10 to 15-minute walk from the jetty.

Before arranging your road journey, ask your hotel, resort or accommodation provider which Tioman jetty is most suitable for where you are staying. Then compare the available ferry departures from Mersing Jetty and Tanjung Gemok Jetty before planning your Kuala Lumpur journey to the correct mainland terminal.

Private transfer from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing Jetty

A private transfer is the direct option if you want to leave from your Kuala Lumpur accommodation and travel without changing transport along the way. My Little Taxi provides this journey for RM750 for your group only, including petrol and road tolls, and the drive normally takes about 5 to 5.5 hours depending on departure time and traffic.

The transfer can end at Mersing Jetty for a same-day ferry connection or at an agreed hotel in Mersing town if you prefer to arrive the day before. This option can be particularly practical when travelling with children, several suitcases or diving equipment, or when an early ferry requires a very early departure from Kuala Lumpur.

For a same-day ferry connection under normal traffic conditions, the pickup can be planned around your confirmed ferry departure. If you have a morning ferry during a major Malaysian public-holiday period, staying overnight in Mersing is usually the more comfortable option.

Travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing by bus

The express bus is the practical lower-cost alternative. Buses leave from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur and travel to Mersing Bus Terminal, with current online information showing an average journey of around 5 hours 30 minutes and fares starting from approximately RM32 per person.

The bus does not finish at your hotel or directly at the ferry entrance, but Mersing Bus Terminal is close to Mersing Jetty. The walk is approximately 10 to 15 minutes, and a short local taxi ride can be more convenient if you are travelling with larger suitcases, children or diving equipment.

This short final connection is one reason the bus remains a practical choice. Once you arrive in Mersing, the main long-distance part of the journey is already complete.

Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok Jetty?

Mersing Jetty and Tanjung Gemok Jetty are two separate mainland gateways for ferries to Tioman Island. Choosing between them depends on more than the road journey from Kuala Lumpur. You should also consider the ferry departure time and the Tioman jetty that is most suitable for where you are staying on the island.

Before booking your ferry, ask your hotel, resort or accommodation provider which Tioman jetty you should use. Different parts of the island are served by different jetties, and choosing the correct arrival point can make the onward journey to your accommodation much easier.

Ferry schedules can vary according to tide conditions and passenger demand, and departures from the mainland can sometimes be as early as 7.00 am. If the available ferry from one terminal requires an uncomfortably early departure from Kuala Lumpur, check the ferry options from the other terminal. Depending on your travel date, a later departure may be available and may give you a more comfortable start to the journey.

The ferry operators do not necessarily offer the same island stops. Cataferry's current booking system shows Genting, Paya and Tekek as selectable Tioman drop-off points. Bluewater's route information lists Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang (ABC) and Salang, and current booking results also show services to these five locations.

A practical way to plan the journey is therefore to first confirm which Tioman jetty is suitable for your accommodation, then compare the available ferry departures from Mersing Jetty and Tanjung Gemok Jetty. Once you have selected the ferry and mainland departure terminal, you can plan your Kuala Lumpur departure time and road transfer around that booking.

Which option suits your journey?

The bus is normally the lower-cost choice, particularly for one traveller, while a private transfer is more direct because it starts from your agreed Kuala Lumpur pickup point and ends at Mersing Jetty or your Mersing hotel.

A private transfer can also be easier when travelling with several bags, diving equipment or children because you do not need to travel first to TBS and then make the final connection from Mersing Bus Terminal. It also gives you more flexibility for an early departure when your ferry timing requires it.

The bus can still work well for a same-day ferry, but check the actual scheduled arrival against your ferry departure and allow enough time to continue from the bus terminal to the jetty. Not every bus departure will suit an early-morning ferry connection.

When should you leave Kuala Lumpur for Mersing?

There is no single departure time that suits every journey to Mersing. For a same-day ferry connection, work backwards from your confirmed ferry departure and the operator's current check-in requirements, then allow enough time for the road journey and the final connection to the jetty where applicable.

A private transfer can be arranged for a very early departure from Kuala Lumpur when confirmed in advance. If you travel by bus, choose a service that gives you enough time to continue from Mersing Bus Terminal to the jetty and complete ferry check-in. Do not plan the connection only around the advertised road journey time.

Staying overnight in Mersing can be a more comfortable choice when your ferry departs early or if you prefer not to combine the long road journey and ferry crossing on the same day. My Little Taxi can drop you at an agreed hotel in Mersing town for the same RM750 fare as the Kuala Lumpur to Mersing Jetty transfer. Transport from the hotel to the jetty the following morning is separate unless specifically included in your written confirmation.

Bus travellers can use the same approach by travelling to Mersing the previous day, continuing from the bus terminal to their accommodation, and travelling to the jetty the following morning.

Road traffic can be heavier during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Aidiladha and Chinese New Year. For a private road journey during these periods, allow about 6.5 to 7.5 hours when planning the Kuala Lumpur-to-Mersing journey. If you have a morning ferry during one of these busy periods, staying overnight in Mersing the day before is usually the more comfortable option.

Planning your arrival at Mersing Jetty

The Kuala Lumpur-to-Mersing road journey and the Tioman ferry are two separate stages. Before leaving Kuala Lumpur, confirm your ferry date, scheduled departure time, correct mainland terminal and your ferry operator's current check-in instructions.

If you travel by bus, allow for the short journey between Mersing Bus Terminal and Mersing Jetty. If you use a private transfer, the Kuala Lumpur pickup time can be planned around the ferry information you provide.

Ferry schedules, check-in requirements and operating conditions can change, so use the current information supplied with your own ferry booking rather than relying on an old timetable.
